Abstract

Reflects on the risk of the UK developing a "constitutional idolatry" for a written constitution, and the dangers which such a codified constitution may present. Examines the changing meaning of "constitution" and discusses, with reference to the US, how a written constitution may expand judicial power of review, hamper constitutional evolution and negate contemporary opinions. Assesses potential alternatives to a written constitution.
