Abstract

Busby highlights the significant role of scandal politics as a commonplace feature of the political environment and an issue which serves to shape popular consideration of politics in the United States. He draws attention to the key elements involved in scandal politics, why scandal maintains its prominence as an issue which draws widespread political, media and public attention and outlines how the genre of scandal politics has changed in subtle ways across the juncture of the twentieth to twenty-first centuries. For all the lessons learned about scandal and its often destructive consequences political figures still appear to engage in risky personal ventures and Busby considers, in this context, the need for damage limitation measures to contain and manage the fallout when wrongdoing is uncovered
