This introductory chapter begins by establishing the overarching objectives of the handbook. It goes on to explore the thorny question of how children’s film may be conceptualized, outlining a number of possible critical approaches to the topic, and arguing in favour of understanding children’s films both in terms of their shared textual features and the contextual processes through which they are marketed, disseminated, and received by audiences. The chapter then presents a very brief historical overview of international children’s cinema to set the scene for the subsequent chapters in the volume. It concludes with an outline of the book’s structure and methodological approach, synopses of each chapter, and a consideration of the volume’s position in the developing field of scholarship on children’s film.
