Abstract

Dwarfism has a prominent role with fairy tales, which conjure images of fantasy and mythology. For centuries, people with dwarfism have been sought after for humorous
entertainment purposes, which Disney has not only encouraged, but also profited from. Due to its prominent presence, how dwarfism is represented within the entertainment industry is important to consider. This chapter explores various Disney representations of dwarfism, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Willow and The Little man of Disneyland.
Drawing on the metanarrative of dwarfism, this chapter examines how Disney either reinforces or challenges the metanarrative and what impact this has for the social standing of people with dwarfism. This chapter argues why it is important that Disney produces a more positive representation of dwarfism in all its films and televisions series that challenges the metanarrative.
