Abstract
This article studies the relationship between French-Canadian nationalism and economic liberalism in the work of journalist and public intellectual Étienne Parent (1802-1874). Despite the existence of many studies considering Parent’s political thought, few have considered in depth his economic thought. Yet a thorough analysis of his writings shows that this French-Canadian intellectual considers economic liberalism as a necessary condition for the preservation of French-Canadian nationality. We will thus shed some light on this aspect of Parent’s thought through the analysis of speeches that he delivered in Montreal and Québec city after the Union of 1840.
