Abstract

This is a critical editorial introduction to a special journal issue published by the Journal of Church and State (OUP) on the legacy of Archbishop William Temple (d. 1944) for building the public square in Britain after the War in light of the publication of 'Christianity and the Social Order', which became the blueprint of the Welfare State. Focusing on the way he led in pursuing the common good in a context that was showing signs of religious pluralism and differences, and given his ability to grasp the changes of the complex world in which he lived and his commitment to enabling dialogue with others with the aim of developing a more humane social order that legacy will have lessons for us today in light of the Corona virus pandemic and how various religious communities responded to it.
