An individual’s orientation towards mornings or evenings, referred to as chronotype, is predictive of both physical and mental health outcomes. An evening chronotype is associated with elevated body mass index and a less nutritious diet. However, the mechanisms underpinning the relationship between chronotype and body mass index remain unclear. The current study sought to establish if chronotype is indirectly associated with body mass index, via emotion regulation strategy and emotional eating. An opportunity sample of 202 participants completed questionnaires relating to Morningness-Eveningness, Emotion Regulation, mental wellbeing, eating behaviour and provided their height and weight (to calculate body mass index). A structural equation model suggested that chronotype indirectly influences body mass index via emotion regulation strategy use and emotional eating (p = .003). Chronotype was not directly associated with body mass index (p = .821). As predicted, individuals with an evening chronotype tended to report greater use of suppressive expression, which was then associated with a greater tendency to emotionally eat and to have a higher body mass index. In contrast, individuals with a morning chronotype reported using cognitive reappraisal more frequently as a method of regulating emotions. Where cognitive reappraisal was used, this predicted reduced emotional eating, with these individuals having a lower body mass index. These findings suggest a clear pathway through which chronotype might be associated with body mass index, with evening chronotypes at a greater risk of weight gain.
