Experiencing food insecurity (a lack of stable access to nutritious food) in childhood has been shown to have a negative impact on physical and emotional wellbeing in later life. However, the underlying mechanisms for these relationships are not well understood and would benefit from a measure that estimates levels of food insecurity experienced in childhood. Consequently, we developed and validated a retrospective food insecurity in childhood questionnaire (RFIC). English speaking male and female participants (N = 692) completed the RFIC alongside the perceived inequality in childhood scale, remembered food poverty scale, a subjective measure of childhood socioeconomic status, and addresses when growing up. To assess test-retest reliability, 148 participants completed the RFIC again, one week later. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor structure. Factor 1 consisted of items that related to reduced food availability, factor 2 referred to the types of foods consumed. Both subscales demonstrated good internal reliability and test-retest reliability, and a confirmatory factor analysis confirmed this two-factor structure. RFIC scores were shown to correlate with related scales of childhood inequalities, remembered food poverty and subjective SES. Objective validation checks were also completed against Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) scores for childhood addresses. Findings indicate that the RFIC is a short, practical scale for estimating levels of food insecurity experienced in childhood.
