Abstract

Online platforms can provide an important opportunity for disabled people to create online communities, access support, and forge an identity. However, these opportunities can be hindered by the presence of disablism and cyberbullying which can gain momentum upon the online domain. This chapter explores the nature and extent of online disablism and cyberbullying upon different social media platforms and online bulletin boards. While
cyberbullying refers to the expression of disablist attitudes and speech to disabled people, online disablism refers more broadly to the presence and dissemination of disabling assumptions about disability. While disablism and cyberbullying can be present in different forms, both of these expressions can be understood as operating within a wider cultural narrative which positions disabled people as inferior, lesser, and undesirable. In turn, online
disablism and cyberbullying can have detrimental impacts on offline encounters between disabled and non-disabled people.
