Abstract

This thesis contributes to critical discussion about one of the most pressing problems facing Ethiopia today, namely the paucity of Higher Education provision in the country and the consequent economic and intellectual impact resulting from this deficit. This thesis argues that the model of the church-founded university has the potential to contribute to closing the current gap in Higher Education provision in Ethiopia. Accordingly, it uses qualitative research conducted at three church-founded universities in the UK, Kenya and Nigeria.
Analysis of the data obtained is used to identify the motivations behind the establishment of these universities, the central aspects of their current organisation and the intellectual and economic impact these institutions have had over the course of their existence. The goal of the thesis is thus, to establish a set of good practices in Higher Education, related to church-founded universities which could be applied in the Ethiopian context.
