Abstract

Leadership journeys are never straightforward; they have twists and turns. This introduction shows the importance of exploring learning and teaching journey from disciplinary and institutional perspectives. We reflect on how disciplinary cultures and knowledge structures can affect the learning and teaching leadership journey by drawing on concepts such as signature pedagogies, scholarship of learning and teaching, vertical and horizontal knowledge structures, and academic tribes. Through this we reflect on how leadership experiences may be shaped by different institutional contexts such as in research and/or teaching intensive universities, the size of the institution and their geographic location.
