Abstract
In this chapter, I examine the implication of the debate on the biblical 'promise of the Land' to Israel for Palestinian self-understanding and the wider significance for the Israeli-Palestinian equation. This contribution is neither satisfied by the increased visibility of a particular type of religious Zionism, Christian or Jewish, that exudes a scripturally based political xenophobia of Palestine and its history, nor by a fairly uncritical and apologetic rejection of certain segments of the Hebrew Bible led by some Palestinian activists and writers. A mutually challenging conversation is informed by the complexity of the history of Palestine as well as the tradition of longing for the land in light of scriptural exegesis; The discussion focuses on two different Jewish contributions, that of Eugene Korn and David Meyer, together with the Anglican theologian Rowan Williams and various Palestinian Christian writers.
