When applying psychology to education it tends to be mainly cognitive or developmental psychology that is discussed. And yet education is an intensely social activity, with social relationships, perceptions and interactions between teacher and student, among students and with the wider world all having an impact. This chapter will explore the insight that social psychology offers in all these areas; from group dynamics, social influence and social cognition to persuasion, prejudice and pro-social behaviour. Ultimately, I hope to show that through the application of the social psychology to education we can better understand and enhance the learning process.
