Abstract
In this essay I examine references to specific named women from the Pauline letters in ancient Christian literature in Greek and Latin up to approximately the middle of the fifth century. I demonstrate how ancient authors used the figures of named women from the Pauline letters, Romans 16 in particular, to make a point to their contemporaries, and how they, too, saw the need to reconcile certain general statements about women, which in their view, similarly to 21st century interpreters, implied contradictory perspectives on women.
