Abstract

Edith Wharton was mentored in her early writing career by the Harvard professor Charles Eliot Norton. Norton's influence is shown in her short stories about art and architecture, with their focus on the moral duty of the artist. Norton's historical studies of medieval Italian cathedrals also informed her depiction of Italian culture in texts including her first novel, The Valley of Decision.
