Abstract

This chapter considers the nature, impact and management dimensions of recent geotourism developments on the Maltese Islands. The background and context to general tourism development on the Maltese Islands is presented before highlighting changes to tourism demand and products that have taken place since the late twentieth century that have influenced the growth of geotourism on the islands. The geological and geoheritage aspects of the Maltese Islands are outlined before evaluating their value as geotourism attractions. Examples of the developments and management of geotourism in the Maltese Islands are presented including a consideration of future prospects and potential. Finally, a case study is discussed that demonstrates some of the issues and challenges associated with initiatives that try to incorporate approaches to the conservation and management of geoheritage features in addition to accommodating the demands from tourism.
