Abstract
This article presents a short overview of the printing history of the Bible in German and English at the down of the Protestant Reformation. By contrasting the situation in the Holy German Roman Empire with that in England at the beginning of the sixteenth century, I argue that although their texts are quite close to each other on a linguistic level, the English Bible and its German counterpart functioned very differently in the Early Reformation Period for historical, political and personal reasons.
