Abstract

This article concerns the issue of being engaged philosophically in education. Inspired by Hannah Arendt's idea of exercise in thought and Max Weber's methodology of ideal types I try to investigate possible ways of relating philosophy and educational practice by considering the events that open up possibilities for understanding such a relation, and reconstructing these possibilities as ideal types of philosophical engagement in education. Each of these types refers to a different understanding of philosophy, philosophy of education and the theory and practice of education. Conducting such an exercise aims at formulating the post-critical type analysed at the end of the paper. I assume that, although it is practiced, it has not yet been considered thoroughly, and so it is not acknowledged as a form of philosophical engagement in education.
