My presentation will draw out some of the ethical issues presented by the findings of the doctoral and postdoctoral research I have completed in collaboration with Tate Liverpool’s Learning Department, including ‘Beyond Constructivism’: an AHRC-funded project which asked gallery professionals, artists, partner organisations and academic researchers from across the North West to think together about the future of gallery education. I hope to build on the discussions generated by Beyond Constructivism, by posing questions on the notion of equality between the art organisation and its public participants. Focusing in particular on the various practices of co-production, co-creation and co-design that are increasingly prevalent across visual arts organisations, I will question: what equality for participants might look like? Who is responsible for ensuring equality? What organisational changes might be needed to achieve equality for participants? What risks might these changes pose for the organisation? And are organisations willing to take these risks?
