This article uses performance-based research into John Balshaw’s Jigge, a late seventeenth-century example of the musical jigge genre, to investigate what we can learn about local attitudes to power in the aftermath of the civil wars. It argues that although this is a genre that is frequently associated with flimsy plots, stereotypical characters and bawdy humour, John Balshaw’s Jigge is unique in containing significant references to local and national politics, and as such it is particularly useful in engaging communities with their local history and heritage.
