Abstract

The Institute for the Art and Practice of Dissent at Home is a critico-political performative intervention into hetero-normative, neoliberal family life. This intervention happens across three plateaus. Plateau 1: Home Activities: including performances, artists’ residencies, political meetings and critical reading groups. Plateau 2: Outside the Home: including participation as a family of performers at different art events, protests, festivals and academic conferences. Plateau 3: Educating the Home: taking the children to demonstrations, political meetings and national/international solidarity events, where we enact a radical pedagogy of learning together how to be critical citizens rather than passive consumers of neoliberal culture. The Institute operates a policy of financial transparency and is funded by 10% of the family’s income (two senior lectureship salaries, child benefit and any other freelance work), this stands at around £450 per month.
