Abstract

Beyond Constructivism: rethinking gallery education was conducted in partnership with Tate Liverpool, and was funded by the pilot round of the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s Public Engagement Fund. This short-term, postdoctoral research project built on a critique of constructivist gallery education presented as a result of AHRC Collaborative Doctoral research completed by Dr Antoinette McKane (CAVA) in collaboration with Tate Liverpool’s Learning Department. Beyond Constructivism invited gallery educators, academic researchers, artists, healthcare partners and freelance educators from across the North-West of England, to think together about the current issues in gallery education. By initiating and recording discussions between a variety of stakeholders in gallery education, Beyond Constructivism aimed to identify and present a set of collectively-informed recommendations for future work in research and practice. The resulting discussions were presented, according to the following four themes of the project: Rethinking Purpose, focussing on the intentions and missions of gallery education; Rethinking the ‘Educator’, focussing on the variety of institutional and freelance educator roles in gallery education; Rethinking the ‘Learner’, focussing on the knowledge, experience and perceptions of various learners; Rethinking Environment, focussing on the variety of settings in which gallery education takes place. This report highlights some of the key findings and recommendations of the project.
